Local authorities in Cueibet town of Lakes State said marauders suspected to be from Pagor and Duong Payams on Wednesday killed a Sub-chief, Athugi Atool, and raided 56 head of cattle in Agangrial village of Ngap Payam.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the secretary-general of the now-defunct Gok State, Zechariah Mamer Thokgor, confirmed that 26 out of 56 head of cattle raided were recovered by the owners from the armed raiders.
"The security forces are still following up the raiders who killed Sub-chief Athugi Atool from the Jurbeli section of Ngap Payam," Zechariah Mamer said.
He said the general security situation since Christmas was calm except for the incident three days ago when Sub-chief Athugi Atool was killed and cattle raided.
"We have peace and reconciliation committees appointed by Lakes State. These peace committees are doing tremendous work in Abiriu and Cueibet towns. They are talking to people to cease intercommunal hostilities, cattle raiding, and revenge killing in the Gok community of Cueibet County,” Zechariah Mamer said.
He appeals to the Gok community of Cueibet County of Lakes State, particularly the warring sections of Ayiel, Pagok, Waat, Joth, and Kongor, to cease inter-communal conflicts and cattle raids.
He said there were no reports of road ambushes and looting since security forces were deployed along the main road by the Lakes State governor, Makur Kulang.
"We never want bloodshed in Gok community in 2021. We want peace and reconciliation, particularly in the Gok community," Zacharia Mamer said.
