At least six people were killed in separate attacks carried out by gunmen on Gadiang area in South Sudan’s Jonglei state on Friday and Monday, a top state official said.

Philip Aguer Panyang, Jonglei State Governor, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that members of the SPLA-IO from Akobo area attacked Gadiang on Friday and Monday.

He further said the two attacks resulted in the killing of at least three civilians and three SPLA soldiers, saying the attackers also took about 2,000 heads of cows.   

Aguer pointed to mounting tensions over movements of armed groups in the bush, while emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence among the people of Jonglei and neighbouring states.

Cattle raid in Tali

Separately, at least two people were killed in an attack by cattle raiders in Tali County in South Sudan’s Terekeka State, a local official said.

Angelo Maring, Tali County Commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that a group of criminals from Eastern Lakes State came and raided cattle in the county.

The commissioner pointed out that the local authorities in Eastern Lakes managed to recover about 42 cows so far. Maring added that the deputy governor of Eastern Lakes State had formed a committee to look into the matter.
