Gunmen have killed a police inspector in Maridi County of South Sudan’s Western Equatoria State, a local official said, the latest attack in the restive region.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the Executive Director of Maridi County, John Ezikia said the Maridi police inspector and his brother were both shot dead by a group of armed men at their home in Maridi on Monday at around 9 PM.
“The accident occurred at around 9 PM. We heard the sound of a gun on the side of the town, and after our communication with the security personnel they told us that the inspector of police and his brother have been shot dead at their home,” he explained.
The motive behind the killing of the senior police officer remains unclear.
The local official said security forces have put measures in place to arrest the perpetrators and transport the body of the late police inspector back home in Lake State.
The late police inspector was identified as Brigadier Abraham Chol.
