Fighting broke out Saturday morning in Otogo Payam of Yei River County in Central Equatoria state, leaving one soldier wounded.
Steven Ladu, information minister for the proposed Yei River State, said the violence occured in Obmasi Kakwa boma while another source said there was fighting in Mugo area too.
“Some people came this morning and attack the military barracks but they were repulsed and there is no serious damage done but one soldier was wounded,” Ladu said.
He said many civilians fled amid the fighting, and security organs visited the site today for about four hours patrolling the area with the chiefs to try to convince villagers to return to their homes.
Ladu said since the incident the situation has been normal.
Separately, the minister said roads to South Sudan’s capital Juba from Yei will be closed due to the fighting which took place Thursday and Friday in Juba. He said citizens have been ordered not to travel to the capital until the situation is normal.
Correction: an earlier version of this article said the fighting broke out Friday morning. It was on Saturday morning.
