A woman was shot and killed Thursday evening in Yambio town in Western Equatoria state, according to eyewitnesses and local officials.
The shooting occurred in the Ikpiro area near a small market.
A journalist from Anisa FM, speaking on condition of anonymity for safety reasons, told Radio Tamazuj that staff at the station were trapped inside due to gunfire.
“We are hearing gunshots in Ikpiro, close to the small market. We’re inside the station and afraid to move out,” the journalist said.
A local resident also confirmed hearing multiple gunshots.
Edward Mombasa, chief of Yabongo area, identified the victim as the wife of a man known locally as “John the Builder.”
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and the suspect has not been apprehended.
Acting Governor of Western Equatoria State Daniel Badagbu confirmed the incident to Radio Tamazuj, calling it an apparent attempt to provoke unrest.
“This gunshot incident appears to be an intentional act to destabilize the community in Yambio,” Badagbu said. He added that security forces were deployed to restore calm and investigate.
