Two people were killed and another five were wounded including children when a grenade exploded at Yida refugee camp in South Sudan’s Unity state on Saturday, according to eyewitnesses.
Multiple sources from the camp told Radio Tamazuj that the incident involved a couple who were fighting at their home, which prompted the man to detonate the grenade.
“The perpetrator killed himself and his own son besides wounding three other boys and two neighbors who went there to intervene in order to calm down the quarrel,” said an eyewitness.
The wife of the perpetrator said the quarrel between them was not new, claiming it was previously mediated by the sultans of the camp. Another meeting on their marital problems was expected to take place on the same day the incident occurred.
A police official in Yida, Lieutenant Bior Kur Nyor, told Radio Tamazuj that they heard a loud explosion at night, corroborating the same version of the story mentioned by eyewitnesses at the scene.
He stressed that the police will carry out the investigation to uncover the reasons behind the incident and called on South Kordofan refugees to engage in their daily routines as usual.
