At least two people were killed and eight others wounded when an SPLA soldier detonated a hand grenade at Agok market in the contested area of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan on Tuesday.

Deng Juac Dau, Rumamer County Commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj that an SPLA soldier coming from an operations area detonated a grenade near a clinic within the Agok market. He further said the bombing resulted in the killing of a woman on the spot and wounding of nine others.

Deng added that one of the wounded people died later in a hospital, while the other eight wounded are receiving treatment in the same hospital. The official pointed out that four of the wounded hail from Sudan’s Darfur region and that they were working as traders in the market.

The official claimed that the suspected soldier was arrested. He called on the SPLA leadership to disarm its soldiers who are given permission to visit their families so as to avoid such an incident.
