A peace conference for feuding communities of Tonj East, Tonj North, and Tonj South counties in South Sudan’s Warrap State is expected to start on 5th April 2022 through 9th April 2022.
High-profile delegates from the presidency and Warrap’s neighboring states are scheduled to attend the conference.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Warrap state spokesperson Riing Deng Ading announced that the conference organized by the state governor will bring lasting peace to the area.
“The conference is all about the peace dialogue among the citizens of Tonj East, South, and North and will commence on the 5th of April in Tonj South County headquarters. Its significance is to bring lasting peace where people of Tonj will be together in peace and harmony,” he added.
“It will be attended by governors of neighboring states and a delegation from the presidency. Since there is ongoing peaceful disarmament, it will add value to achieving peace in the greater Tonj area. I urged the people of Warrap state and people of Tonj, in particular, to leave their grievances behind and embrace peace and address their problems once and for all.”
Tonj South County Commissioner Marco Agoor Malang said they are ready to receive the delegates and expect that the conference will unite the people of greater Tonj.
“Greater Tonj will be united together and there will be peace because those who will be coming are key peace players. If we talk with one voice we will achieve peace in greater Tonj which will be also the peace of Warrap State and that is the expected good outcome of the conference,” he said.
He adds, “We are prepared and ready to receive the visitors and take care of them. My message to my community of Tonj South is to behave well with the visitors and remember that if we are bleeding, it is the whole of South Sudan bleeding. So it is important to choose peace because our country needs us and the president himself needs us so we better forget the past and begin the new page of development.”
Last week, communities of Tonj South attended a three-day peace conference that ended with calls for disarmament and justice.
The communities of Greater Tonj have been embroiled in months of deadly cattle raids and revenge attacks that have claimed hundreds of lives.
