Greater Bahr el-Ghazal governors pledge support to Kiir in next election

Governors from Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Warrap, Lakes State and Western Bahr el Ghazal have unanimously resolved to fully support the election of President Salva Kiir for another term in office. Delegates from the four states travelled to Wau on May 15 to discuss unity and development in Greater Bahr el Ghazal and made the pledge as part of their resolutions from the conference.

In signing the resolutions, Nyangdeng Malek, Warrap state’s governor, rebuffed accusations made by her counterpart from Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Paul Malong Awan, that Malek seemed ‘undecided’ in whether she would support Salva Kiir for another term in office.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Malek confirmed her support of President Salva Kiir: “I told the participants in Wau that the accusations of Malong are not true. The President was elected at the same time I was elected, so we are a team.”

However, she added that she will only offer Kiir her support provided the SPLM follow a democratic process: “The SPLM should have the discipline to do their own things through the party and not as individuals. You have the current chairperson, his two deputies and a secretary general. One of them cannot just say ‘I am going to contest’. By doing so you are abandoning the structures and system of the SPLM.”
