Grassroots organization aims for Abyei peace

A new organization has been established in the disputed Abyei area between Sudan and South Sudan to promote peace and reconciliation between different clans and ethnic groups.

The Abyei Organization for Peace and Human Rights (AOPHR) was established a few weeks ago, board of directors chairman Ninkal Aguer told Radio Tamazuj Tuesday.

Aguer said they will work for the consolidation of peace among Abyei natives, beginning with working for coexistence among the nine Ngok Dinka chiefdoms before moving to neighboring communities including the Misseriya Arab tribe.

He said there was a long history of cooperation between the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya that has been marred by recent boundary disputes.

Aguer said they are organizing a workshop on social peace and conflict resolution in collaboration with other local peace organizations.

“The workshop is very important because the communities of Abyei are in need of peace among themselves,” he said.
