The authorities in Likuangole County in Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) have called for agricultural support to avert the looming food insecurity situation in parts of the county.
Speaking on Radio Tamazuj’s commissioners’ Program on Wednesday, Commissioner John Gogol of Likuangole, said hunger is looming in parts of the county and that agriculture is the only way to avert the situation as the rains start.
“The situation is very dire, especially for those in the border areas of Wuno and Kariak. Thousands of residents are in a dire humanitarian situation because of past inter-communal violence,” Gogol said. “So, they need food to eat and support so that they produce their own foods.”
He called on the national government and aid agencies to come to their aid.
“Local residents are ready to farm. We need seeds of maize and dura (sorghum). It is through agriculture that locals will be able to be self-reliant,” he stressed.
For his part, Guzulu Yar Korok, the GPAA agriculture minister, reiterated the calls, warning that the situation could worsen in the coming months should there be no good harvests.
“We received some seeds from our partner and we are distributing them in parts of GPAA but we want more support because everyone is ready to farm,” he said. “However, the other challenge is that it rarely rains so we cannot predict our harvest this year.”
