Authorities of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) and Jonglei State have recommitted to fostering peace and security among their local populations by boosting working relations and implementing agreed resolutions.
The commitment was made during a meeting held in the GPAA capital, Pibor town, between GPAA’s Lokali Amae, and his Jonglei counterpart, Governor Denay Jock Chagor on Monday.
Amae told Radio Tamazuj that the meeting was fruitful as they agreed to improve working relations in a bid to forge peace in the region.
“As the two authorities, we had agreed to set up surveillance to crack on raiders from either side. On the issue of child abduction, we also agreed to continue with the recovery mission and that we will also be engaging our partners for resources needed to implement the resolutions of the inter-communal conference,” he explained.
Amae added, “Within this week, six Lou Nuer former abductees will be airlifted from Pibor to Pieri. There are also nine others from Dinka Bor but their handover date has yet to be decided.”
For his part, William Kuol, the Jonglei gender minister and a member of the delegation accompanying the state governor, also said they visited Pibor to explore ways of restoring peace among the rival groups in the area.
“The meeting was fruitful. We discussed the issue of road ambushes, child abductions, and cattle raids. There is a commitment from both sides and this is a good gesture of peace,” he said.
Kuol also pointed out that they are engaging their people to hand over their abductees as is done by the Pibor side.
Bol Deng Bol, a civil society activist in Jonglei, welcomed the move taken by the two authorities, saying it will help build trust among the locals.
