The Government of South Sudan said it has a master plan for the transformation of Juba International Airport to international standards.
Speaking during the conclusion of the second edition of the Juba Economic Forum, Gen. Taban Deng Gai, the vice president in charge of the cabinet’s infrastructure cluster, said the airport’s current status is way below international standards.
“On the issue of Juba airport, we do not call it renovation but implementation of the master plan of the airport. If you talk about renovation, then you are leaving the cargo section in its place, the VIP section, which does not look like one and is also in the wrong place and you are leaving the fuel deport in the wrong place,” Gai stated.
He said the government has a master plan for Juba International Airport but did not state when the transformation of the airport will commence.
“When you talk about an international airport, we have a master plan for it. What has been delaying us is the issue of funding. But for your information, there is a lot of progress at the Juba International Airport” he stated. “Also, very soon we are going to own our airspace control and there are technical people who have been doing training on how to take it from Sudan.”
“We are soon starting to fence the airport, do some engineering work and so we want to implement the master plan and promise you that it is happening,” en. Gai added.
He also revealed that the government plans to rehabilitate the Juba-Nimule and Juba-Nadapal highways and said work will commence soon.
According to the vice president, the government has engaged the World Bank to support the planned projects.
