Representatives from both the government and the opposition group SPLM-IO on Tuesday formed a joint committee that will thoroughly explore issues that fuel communal conflicts in Bieh State.
The move came after rising tesions between the members of Cie-Leek and Cie-Nyakoang clans in Waat County.
Elijah Mayen Lul, a member of the SPLM-IO delegation, told Radio Tamazuj that the joint committee will have a mandate to proffering solutions to long-standing disagreements between the two clans that have claimed lives.
“We agreed that blood compensation must be done between the two communities. Four people were killed from Cie-Leek and 11 people from Cie-Nyakoang in 2018. The joint committee will oversee the compensation, “Mayen explained.
He added, “Those with broken limbs from both sides will also be compensated.”
Mayen pointed out that the joint committee will move to the areas of the two feuding communities to disseminate peace messages.
For his part, James Yien, the Bieh State information minister said the government is hopeful that peace will be accepted by the two feuding clans after a visit by members of the opposition from Langkien area.
Minister Yien urged the rival clans to remain calm as the joint committee tries to addresses the conflict.
