Upper Nile State Governor James Odhok Oyai has fired and replaced the mayor of Malakal city council and appointed a replacement.

In a gubernatorial decree issued Tuesday, Governor Odhok removed Mr Koang Tharjath Thoch Chuol as mayor of the Malakal city council.

In the decree, the governor said that he took the decision to exercise the powers conferred upon him under article (99) A of the constitution of Upper Nile State 2011 and his appointment by President Salva Kiir through a presidential decree.

The governor did not give reasons for firing the mayor who had been serving in the position since October 2021.

In another decree, Governor Odhok appointed Mr Chuol Lualweng Woul Tel as the new mayor of Malakal City County.

For years, Malakal town has been largely deserted as civilians fled the civil war that broke out in December 2013. But many are returning home to rebuild their lives after the formation of the unity government in February 2020.
