Northern Bahr el-Ghazal Governor Simon Uber Mawut has formed a Disaster Risk Management Council (DRMC) for the state.
Mawut issued the order forming the Council on Sunday, in fulfilment of a promise he made on his arrival in Aweil town, the headquarters of Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State early this month. The Governor had promised to work hard to promote general security, increase food production and unite the people.
Hours following the order, Northern Bahr el-Ghazal Information and Communication Minister Garang Zachariah Lual confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that the 11-member Council was tasked to address all crises in the state.
The Committee members include ministers Monica Nyibol Aleum Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Ayak Zachariah Ngor, Cooperatives and Rural Development and Achok Akot, Roads and Bridges.
Our governor issued Order No. 3. 2024 for the formation of DRMC comprising 11 members, with himself as the Chairperson, Deputy Governor Tong Lual Ayat as Deputy Chairperson and I as Spokesman, confirmed Lual.
He added that the terms of reference for the Council is to oversee functions of the technical committees to be formed under the state Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC), the Directors-General of various ministries and the UN and other agencies.
Further, he said, there would be committees in counties that would be affected by floods to report to the technical committees, which will report to DRMC.
The minister said the council would be permanent and would address issues to do with floods and other disasters.
A State women bloc representative, Maria Abuk Dut, asked the Council to address the problems facing women, girls and children.
The Executive Director for the Community Initiative for Partnership and Development (CIPAD), Deng William Makur, commended the Governor for the imitative, terming it a bridge between the government and partners to coordinate assistance to the communities.
