Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony on Tuesday urged the national government to expedite the construction of major highways connecting to the capital, Juba. He emphasized the pivotal role of roads as a key component for fostering peace.
The appeal took place at the Freedom Hall in Juba during the opening of the 7th Governors’ Forum. Governor Adil asserted that the completion of these roads would not only facilitate the return of refugees but also contribute to economic development and enhanced security.
Highlighting the significance of prioritizing road infrastructure, he stated, “Prioritizing roads is a key ingredient for peace and an essential component for building economic transformation in the country.”
Additionally, Governor Adil congratulated President Kiir for the ongoing construction projects, citing examples such as Juba-Bahr El Ghazal, Juba-Torit-Nadapal, Juba-Mundri-Yambio-Wau, Juba—Kajo-keji, and Juba-Yei-Kaya roads. He expressed optimism about the positive impact these completed roadways would have on the region’s development and overall stability.
Governor Adil expressed, “I sincerely appeal to the national government and relevant institutions for the swift implementation of these road construction projects. Your Excellency, these roads are crucial for peace-building, facilitating the return of our citizens, boosting trade and production, and ensuring security stabilization, among other benefits.”
In addition, Governor Adil called upon his fellow governors to reaffirm their commitment to the implementation of the peace agreement, emphasizing its pivotal role in fostering stability throughout the country.
“As a government, we acknowledge the challenges faced by the South Sudanese people, and while awaiting government intervention, it is imperative for us to reaffirm our commitment in this forum. We have a duty to deliver the prerequisites for lasting peace, security, and economic stabilization,” he emphasized.
The 7th Governors’ Forum, conducted under the theme ‘Fostering National Cohesion: South Sudan’s Path to Peaceful Transition for Democratic Governance,’ is seen by Governor Adil as a crucial moment for change in 2024. He urged all participants to view it as a shift from the past to a new beginning.
“I, therefore, call upon all of us to renew our commitment to the exchange of ideas and expertise, fostering liberation and responsive governance in our respective states and administrative areas,” Governor Adil stated, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and shared experiences for effective governance.
