Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil on Friday revoked the deployment of the Lainya County Commissioner as the caretaker mayor of Juba City Council (JCC).
The now embattled Commissioner Emmanuel Khamis was assigned as the acting JCC mayor in late June after the sacking of then-Mayor Michael Ladu Allah-Jabu and his deputy in charge of infrastructure, Thiik Thiik Mayrdit.
However, earlier this week, in a video that went viral on social media platforms, Khamis was seen wielding a pistol in his right hand and physically assaulting a female vendor selling mosquito nets at the Seventh-day Adventist roundabout.
The video led to an uproar in parliament, among women activists, civil society organizations, and the public who called for his immediate sacking.
Governor Adil, seemingly reacting to public outrage, capitulated and removed Khamis from acting as city mayor.
In a gubernatorial order seen by Radio Tamazuj, Adil relieved Emmanuel Khamis Richard as the Acting Mayor of Juba City Council and assigned the Chief Executive Officer of JCC, Martin Simon Wani, to supervise the general activities of the Council until a substantive mayor is appointed.
“Revocation of the Assignment of the commissioner of Lainya County, Hon. Emmanuel Khamis Richard as the Caretaker Mayor of Juba City Council, Central Equatoria State,” the order read. “Therefore, the Governor immediately Directs the Chief Executive Officer of Juba City Council, Can. Martin Simon Wani, to supervise the general activities of Juba City Council until a substantive mayor is appointed as soon as possible.”
