A government official in South Sudan’s Southern Liech state said they released two prisoners of war they had been holding and handed them over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in line with the peace deal.

Southern Liech’s Minister of Information Franco Duoth Diu told Radio Tamazuj that they had released two Prisoners of War (POWs) in the state on Thursday.

“Maj. Nyirbang Keah Guet and Capt. Gatkuoth Chop Liah were released in Southern Liech on Thursday morning. They were released in the presence of the ICRC and CTSAMM,” Duoth said.

The state minister pointed out that the two SPLA-IO officers were detained in relation to the conflict. “The two officers have been released because we have peace in the country,” he said.

In September, President Salva Kiir ordered the Chief of Defence Forces to release all prisoners of war and detainees under the supervision of the ICRC.
