Peter Makuoth, Minister of Information in South Sudan’s proposed Southern Liech state says that the Leer County area lacks drugs and he claims that cholera is also spreading in the area.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, he said the evacuation of humanitarian organizations from the area in October following clashes between government and opposition deteriorated the situation.

“There were cases of cholera in Leer, Mayandit and other villages around them. The area is also facing dire health situation due to lack of health facilities,” said Makuoth.

The minister called on the humanitarian organizations to return to the area and provide assistance to the people affected.

Leer town is an army garrison. Rebels control the countryside in the county.

Recent fighting in Unity State, which comprises the three successor state of Ruweng, Southern Liech and Northern Liech, involves government troops, allied militia loyal to Taban Deng, and SPLA-IO rebels.
