Government troops clashed with rebels in Kajo-keji County this morning, both sides said, hours before a declared ceasefire comes into effect.
Both sides accused the other of starting the fighting in Kajo-Keji County in Yei River State.
The government and opposition groups signed a framework agreement in Khartoum on Wednesday in the latest attempt to end the ongoing fighting.
The ceasefire will formally come into force on Saturday morning.
“Our forces came under heavy fire this morning in Sokari, but we fought back in self-defense,” Lul Ruai Koang, spokesman for the SPLA army, told Radio Tamazuj.
Rebel deputy spokesman Lam Paul Gabriel said the government forces attacked them first at Kindiri, but they were repulsed.
“The attackers had come from Sokari. The fighting stopped around 11 am,” he said.
