A high-level delegation of national ministers attended peace celebrations in South Sudan’s Jonglei State capital, Bor on Saturday.
Speaking at the event, the Information Minister Micheal Makuei Lueth urged communities to forgive those who hurt them during the war.
“This peace belongs to all of us. So you the people of greater Jonglei must assume ownership of the peace. I also want you to forgive those who destroyed your areas because we are in peace,” he said.
The minister said government is committed to implementing the peace agreement and advised communities in South Sudan to desist from malicious gossips for smooth implementation of the peace deal.
A number of opposition officials were also present at the celebration.
Agok Makur, a representative of the SPLM-IO faction led by Riek Machar, urged people to reconcile, adding they are ready to implement the peace accord.
Akim Garang, a representative of the former detainees, called on South Sudanese communities to embrace peace and advised the greater Jonglei state governors to address grievances of the locals.
President Salva Kiir’s military advisor, Daniel Awet Akot led the high level delegation that comprised of ministers Awut Deng Achuil (Gender), Onyoti Adigo (Agriculture), Kuol Manyang (Defense) and Deng Dau (Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs).
The team also consisted of military officers from government and armed opposition groups, governors and lawmakers.
Last year, South Sudan’s arch-foes signed a peace deal to end the civil war that killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions.
