South Sudan’s government said it has dispatched another investigation committee to Kapoeta state to determine who is responsible for the deaths of 15 young children after a botched measles campaign last month.

Reportedly, the children died in Nachodokpele villge of Kautu County in early May and another 32 children suffered fever, vomiting and diarrhoea but recovered.

Speaking to reporters after the extraordinary cabinet meeting on Wednesday, South Sudan’s Information Minister, Michael Makuei said his government will take immediate decisions after the findings of the second investigation team.

“It is unfortunate that this situation has happened and the second investigation is now underway to find exactly who is responsible for that and who is that person who appointed those underage so that they come and mess up with the vaccines,” said Makuei.

“The government of South Sudan is highly shocked by the incident and passes its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and assures them that the government will take appropriate measures as soon as the investigation is over because somebody must be there to answer,”Makuei added.

Earlier this week, the Council of States summoned the Minister of Health and Governor of Kapoeta state to answer questions to help understand the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the 15 children after the measles vaccination campaign.
