Government investigation into Wau fighting begins

An investigation committee recently formed by the national government in Juba has started questioning commanders of military forces in Wau town after recent violence, Akol Akol Ajieth, Mayor of Wau town told Radio Tamazuj.

An investigation committee recently formed by the national government in Juba has started questioning commanders of military forces in Wau town after recent violence, Akol Akol Ajieth, Mayor of Wau town told Radio Tamazuj.

Recently, fighting between the SPLA and the SPLA-IO forces displaced around 70,000 people according to the United Nations. Local residents have demanded an international probe into the fighting.

Ajieth said the committee arrived in Wau on Saturday and began the investigation with commanders of the regular forces on Monday.

“The committee headed by Dr. Riek Gai Kok has come from Juba, the Minister of Health is with us here in Wau, so the investigation is ongoing” said Akol.

Ajieth said out that the committee toured some of the town’s neighborhoods and that the committee’s chairman addressed worshipers in the church on Sunday. The investigation team said they hope to bring justice. 

Mohammed Issa, a Sudanese trader in Wau town, said the death toll of Sudanese traders in the fighting is at least 11.

Issa explained that they found the body of a trader called Mustafa Ahmed, who is from the Darfur region.

“The number has increased from 10 to 11, we found the body of one of our sons from Darfur” Issa said. “We are still waiting for the committee that will come to assess the losses”
