The Commissioner of Gomjuer West County Marko Mayol Maduok has said that recent flooding in the Northern Bahr El Ghazal region has negatively affects much of the local population.
Road transport has become impassable in the low lying areas.
He says locals in the affected areas are now receiving humanitarian assistance in other locations far away from their villages.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, the commissioner Mayol says about 75% percent of the population in the region are in need of humanitarian assistance.
He says local authorities are trying hard to assess the level of damages. “Yes, this is an event that happened this week, and also as you can see the people are now busy with distribution plans with WFP because of this hunger.”
“We are now trying to talk with payam administrators to make assessments to areas affected so that we find out their real needs and then file reports to our local NGOS who can make a comprehensive supervision with them together so as report the actual figures and their humanitarian needs,” Mayol explained.
He also added the destruction caused by flooding is a clear indication that there will be more hunger next year if long terms strategies are not put in place.
