Gok state assembly impeaches local government minister

South Sudan’s Gok State Assembly on Tuesday passed a motion to impeach the state minister of local government and law enforcement Isaac Mayom Malek.

South Sudan’s Gok State Assembly on Tuesday passed a motion to impeach the state minister of local government and law enforcement Isaac Mayom Malek.

The speaker of Gok Assembly Umjima Philip Dak told Radio Tamazuj that 14 members of parliament voted to impeach him.

“The minister has been impeached and told not to step in the office again because he has failed to manage the security in the state and he has also failed in the disarmament process,” she said.

Umjima said a recent cattle raiding incidence led to inter-communal violence which left 13 people dead and many wounded between Waat and Panyar sections of Gok State.

The speaker added that the minister has also been implicated in the misappropriation of public funds collected from communities as fines from the incident.

She stated that the assembly also passed a resolution suspending the payment of fines and compensation until investigations are held.

According to Umjima, the impeachment resolution by the assembly will be presented to Gok State governor on Monday.
