Authorities in Gok state have arrested a school head teacher for allegedly failing to pay money amounting to 2,300 SSP to direct beneficiary in Langdit primary school, Malou Pec County.
The failure of the head teacher identified as Bith Maker Mayor forced authorities in the area on Wednesday to arrest him. The money was meant to encourage the enrollment of the school going age girls as part of the girl child education drive by the government. The project is implemented by BRAC organization through school administration in the area.
The Director General at Gok state Ministry of Education, Akuocwel Magot confirmed the arrest of the school head teacher by Malou Pec county commissioner, Enock Machuoc Mayol. The money was supposed to be paid to a school child identified as Adut Maker. She appealed to the state authorities to rescue her situation because the time is approaching to Christmas. Meanwhile Kenyi Abraham, the Regional Advisor for girl Education program at the National Ministry of Education, condemned the act by the teachers, equating the practicing to theft.
He added that the police and soldiers that were assigned to monitor the payment have also been accused by the local communities of collaborating with teachers to achieve their goal. BRAC, which is a National organization implementing the project in 69 schools in Gok state says it gives 2,300 SSP per school girl as motivation every year.
Correction: The amount of 2,300 SSP is paid to students every year, not every month as originally was stated.
