A 3-year-old girl drowned while playing in floodwaters at home in Rumbek East County of Lakes State.
The mother had left to receive food donations from the Rumbek East task committee at the county headquarters on Saturday when the tragedy happened.
Lakes State Police Spokesperson Maj Elijah Mabor Makuac confirmed to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday the incident that happened in Thon-aduel.
Makuac called on parents in the flood-affected villages to exercise extra care over their children as the devastation wreaks havoc in Lakes State.
“I am appealing to the flood-affected community to take good care of their children amid the displacement of thousands of people in the State,” he said.
“The protection of children should entail restricting them from wandering far and playing in flood waters,” he added,
The Police Spokesman also cautioned the community members to avoid sleeping in weak buildings due to possible collapse as the flooding intensifies.
The Rumbek East member of the State Transitional Assembly, Madhieu Makuac, said that children risked drowning in ditches left open by the ARC road construction, thus parents must exercise extra vigilance.
He said crocodile and other dangerous wild animals had also spread with the heavy floods, posing more risks to the people.
The MP sent his condolence message to the bereaved family.
