Geria County official complains of deteriorating humanitarian situation

Hundreds of people displaced as a result of border conflicts in Geria County of South Sudan’s Torit State could flee into Uganda if not assisted, an official said Tuesday.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the county commissioner, Dominic Onyu Paul said humanitarian organizations failed to assist the suffering population whose houses were burnt to ashes in Iswore payam, a disputed area between Ayaci and Geria counties.

He appealed for assistance before the situation goes out of hand.

“I appeal to humanitarian organizations to come and provide assistance to the displaced people,” Onyu.

According to the official, people sheltering at Katire payam have not received humanitarian assistance ever since they were displaced and now survive on little contributions from communities.

“Up to now, we have not received any support from any partner, the communities are the ones now doing some contribution and continue to support these suffering people,” said Onyu.

In December last year, about 600 people were displaced from Iswore payam after unknown people burnt their houses to ashes.
