Gender inspector in Yei calls for end to discrimination against disabled

Apai Zabib, the inspector for gender and social development in Yei River County, called on citizens not to discriminate against people living with both physical and visual disabilities in the community.

Zabib told radio Tamazuj that most of those who are living with disabilities in rural and urban areas in Yei County are subjected to abuses and that they are being discriminated against in the community.

She called on guardians and non-governmental organizations to support vulnerable groups. She pointed out that the future of school children and students remains unclear due to lack of learning materials.

“People have got a negative attitude that people with disability are not able to do. Another challenge is lack of moving devices, trained teachers in schools and materials to be used by disable children in schools,” said Zabib.

The inspector called on the government to improve the education sector, while calling on organizations to look for donors who can support the disabled.

“To the community outside there, I request that they should develop, love, care and involved them in decision making processes, and they should ensure that education is the key to people with disability,” she said.
