The defense lawyer of Major General Stephen Buay is calling on authorities to release his client citing health concerns.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, lawyer Philip Anyang Ngong, said General Buay who is in detention needs urgent medical attention.
“General Buay is very sick now, he cannot walk, he cannot stand and we ask that this person be allowed to be taken home so that he can seek better medical attention. But that has been denied,’’ he pleaded.
Anyang accused the military administration of violating basic human rights by denying his client access to treatment.
The military court last month sentenced Buay to one year in prison from the date of his arrest, stripped him of his rank and dismissed him from the army.
Buay was arrested in May 2018 and was charged with treason, rebellion, disobedience of lawful orders and violation of standing orders according to articles 61, 67 and 69 of the SPLA Act, 2009.
According to his lawyer, Buay has already served his term in jail and should be released.
Ngong further said the verdict was non-procedural since it was not approved by the commander in chief of the army.
“There should be a confirmation of a court-martial verdict before its readout. It was never confirmed by the president and that is why we are questioning if it is a valid decision or not," he added.
Buay, through his lawyer, has argued that his arrest and detention was politically motivated.
