Authorities of Bor municipality in Jonglei State have started a campaign to clear heaps of garbage in the town after months without collection due to the floods.
Awan Garang, the town’s acting mayor, told Radio Tamazuj Tuesday that they embarked on the cleanup exercise because the garbage was left uncollected since July. He said the garbage collection will continue until the town is clean.
“We started today and will continue for the next five days. We have not collected garbage due to the floods since July. So, our public health department is now clearing the mountains of smelly garbage,” he said.
John Makuei Alier, the director of public health in Bor municipality said they started the campaign as parts of the town remain flooded because the uncollected garbage poses a health risk.
“Today, four trucks were filled with garbage and taken to the dumping site. We are working together with the traders to clean the Marol market because it is very dirty. It was not clean since the floods started in July,” Makuei said.
Ayuen Kur of the Jonglei Chamber of Commerce welcomed the exercise, saying they will work with the municipal authorities to ensure the town is clean.
