Funeral prayers for victims of Juba air crash

South Sudanese families of the plane that crashed in Juba last Wednesday have conveyed funeral tributes for their loved once killed in the crash. Only two people survived after the plane fall down shortly after it took off from Juba International Airport.

A prayer event was held Sunday by the house of the Caretaker Governor of Upper Nile State Chol Thon Balok at Munuki Block ‘C’ at the Libya primary school ground. The caretaker governor said that the two survivors of the plane crash – a man and a child – are in good treatment under his government's care and they will be a symbol to the country.

In the wake of the accident, Chol says his government will do more to facilitate the movement of people safely back to the state if they wish to go. The cargo aircraft that crashed is reported to have been unauthorized to carry passengers.

“From now ongoing, if there is anybody who decides to go back home they should come and register his name and bring the list to the coordination office (in Juba). People should go back if need be,” he said.

He urged that an investigation committee formed by the government should include representatives from Upper Nile State.

Chol also thanked media for their coverage of the plane crash, in spite of conflicting death tolls reported on the day of the crash. “I will like to thank all the media houses especially the SSTV for the coverage that they have made that day. There was no misinformation, only that we (government) didn’t agree on the figures, we have our own and media has theirs.”

For her part, Minister of Telecommunication Rebecca Joshua said for the country to lose more than 35 people or more than 41 people at the same is a great loss. She said the country should learn from this mistake and correct it in order to create a conducive environment for the people of South Sudan.

“I wanted to tell those who lost their love ones or affected by this plane crash that... we shall put our minds together and clean our tears and at the same time as we mourn them,” she said. “I just wanted to tell you that too much blame will not help us, the government has formed a different committee of three groups and we wish that the result of this investigation will convince us on the cause of the plane crash,” Rebecca said.

“We shall not blame ourselves because there is a shortage of transports, people wanted to travel to their places, there are some desperate who have no other means only wanted to travel with cargo. Let us correct the wrong and to put things right in order to help by bringing good environment to our people,” she said.
