South Kordofan state’s western towns are currently suffering a fuel crisis, triggering an increase in the price of domestic travel and consumers’ goods in the region.

A number of citizens from the region told Radio Tamazuj that there is a complete lack of diesel in the region.

The price of a ticket from Babanusa to el-Fula town rose from 45 pounds to 60 pounds over a one week period as they attributed the reason behind the shortage to a failure to resupply petrol stations in the region. Traders have apparently resorted to buying fuel by tankers amidst concerns over the security situation in the region.

“The lack of fuel had negatively impacted the transportation system between the towns of el-Fula and Babanusa, something which is supposed to be for 10 – 15 pounds. The issue exacerbated within the beginning of this month,” claimed one citizen.

The impact of the fuel crisis on the price of commodities is, however, something which could affect everyone in the region, imposing a higher cost of living on families who have already been affected by insecurity in the border region and economic difficulties.
