Local officials said intercommunal clashes erupted in Jonglei State on Saturday, but no details on casualties were immediately available.

Daniel Both, the secretary general of the defunct Bieh State, told Radio Tamazuj Saturday ethnic clashes had erupted between the rival Lou Nuer and Murle communities in Uror County.

“Areas of Ghuorgaanwel, Guanchat, Pieri and Gokgoak of Uror County were attacked by heavily armed Murle youth. They overran those areas but our youth later repulsed them. We haven’t yet received the details of the clashes. Local residents have been displaced,” Both explained.

James Ruai, the state director of information also confirmed the incident, saying the fighting stopped after the local youth managed to repulse the attackers.

Separately, Philip Thon Leek, a lawmaker representing Duk County in the national legislative assembly said his area also came under attack by armed youth. However, the legislator did not give details of about the attack.

Radio Tamazuj could not reach Greater Pibor officials to comment on the matter.

Communities of the greater Jonglei state have for long been wrangling leading to cattle raids and child abductions.
