Langkien town, the headquarters of Nyirol County in Jonglei State, has been submerged by fresh floods following days of torrential rains.
The floods have left thousands of local residents homeless.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Nyirol County Commissioner James Bol Makuey said the humanitarian situation was dire and appealed for intervention.
“Water from two days of heavy rains and the floods from surrounding swamps have submerged Langkien, making the airstrip unsuitable for helicopters to land,” Bol said.
“Within the town center, two households have been displaced, 70 in Par and 112 in Kopnat. Additionally, areas such as Pulturuk have been affected with 184 families displaced, 136 in Waat, and 579 in Pading,” he said.
The County Commissioner warned that the situation could deteriorate further in the coming weeks if nothing is done.
One of the victims of the floods, John Landy, said they were going hungry.
“We are really suffering. I have been displaced with my five children, and I am now in the open without food. I am appealing to well-wishers to mitigate these floods because more are expected,” Landy said.
Local Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) Coordinator Gakhor Dual said aid agencies were being engaged to mobilize support for the flood victims.
“At least 3,790 households have been affected by these floods in Thol, Pulturul, Cwil, Nyabor, and Pading. Their situation is dire and we appeal that they be assisted with food and non-food items,” he said.
