A free eye surgery camp for cataract and trachoma patients is ongoing in South Sudan’s Jonglei State, capital, Bor.
Partners in Compassionate Care (PCC), a United States-based organization, is sponsoring the campaign in Bor town.
At least 300 patients with eye complications will undergo surgeries.
PCC’s executive director, Deng Ajak Jongkuch said at least 41 patients underwent surgeries since the campaign started Monday.
He said eye operation, which started on March 18, will run till April 2.
“Our target is 300 patients. About 41 patients were operated so far.The turnout is so good. People are now able to see,” said Ajak.
“We felt older people are so productive. And for one to care for a blind person, you will have two people who will not be contributing to the economy of their families,” he added.
While appealing to humanitarian agencies, Ajak vowed to lobby funds to extend the cataract camp to other areas of the region.
He thanked all those who supported the needy people in Jonglei.
For her part, 78-year old Deborah Akoor could not hide her joy after she underwent a cataract surgery on Wednesday.
Akoor appreciated the US-based organization for helping her regain her initially lost sight, adding it would make her self-reliant.
