At least four women and girls are thought to have been abducted by rebels loyal to the former vice president Riek Machar, according to authorities in Maban County in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State.
During an attack on Jamam area late last week, the rebels killed several civilians and also abducted girls, Maban County Commissioner Timato Nau told Radio Tamazuj.
He disclosed that five civilians including three women were killed and four young women including at least one girl were abducted during the attack.
The official further said the attackers took cattle from local citizens. However, Timato said the security situation has returned to normal.
“A large number of citizens have been affected by the recent attack, so they are now in dire need of food and medicines,” he said.
The top county official pointed out that citizens who ran away from the attack are starting to return back home, while calling on the international NGOs to provide humanitarian aid to the conflict-affected people in the area.
