At least four refugees from Blue Nile state reportedly have been killed in the Ethiopia-based Bambasi refugee camp. 36 others were handed over to the Sudanese authorities in the Blue Nile state by the Ethiopian government.

“Over the last four days, Ethiopian authorities have surrendered 36 refugees to the Sudanese authorities which for his part subsequently deported them back to Sudan territory, but four Sudan’s refugees were killed, specifically from Blue Nile State”, a source confirmed.

“The 36 refugees were heading to Hugul El Dahab area in the Blue Nile state. They were intercepted and handed over to Sudanese government at the Ethiopia-Sudan border. They were then boarded on a helicopter to Damazin, the capital of the Blue Nile state.”  Omda Mohamed Fadelmullah, a Blue Nile refugee explained.

Insecurity is allegedly rampant in the Ethiopian Bambasi camp. Sudanese refugees expressed their anxiety over the deteriorating security situation in the camp, pointing to absence of protection by the police. They also appealed to UN agencies for assistance and protection.

The Republic of Ethiopia accommodates thousands of Sudan’s Blue Nile State refugees who fled when the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Sudan People’s Liberation Army North (SPLA-N) erupted in 2011.
