Four students at Pariang Camp detained by police

Fears have spread among Nuba refugees at Pariang Camp after harassment by police in the camp. The camp in northern Unity State is home to the only secondary school for Nuba refugees.

A group of more than 40 secondary students from South Kordofan living in Pariang were intercepted by police last Wednesday while returning from a club with a television set, where the students had been watching a football match.

Students explained that they were on their way home when one member of the police stopped them and told them they had stayed too late. After a verbal altercation, four students were arrested the next day. They were: (1) Mufid Yagub; (2) Eliya Abdalrahman; (3) Ahmed Ragab and (4) Hamad Musa.  They were taken to the police station where they were beaten. One was seriously injured and was later transferred to Pariang Hospital for treatment.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, a Pariang student demanded that authorities order police to stop interfering in the affairs of students.
