At least four people suffered severe injuries following an attack by an unknown armed group in Rubkona County, Unity State, a local official said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Friday, Rubkona County Commissioner of Rubkona County, Clement Juol Dador, said a truck heavily loaded with goods heading to Mayom was ambushed by unidentified gunmen dressed in military uniforms.
He said the ambush happened on the Rotriak-Mayom road as the truck ferried goods to Mayom.“A heavy truck owned by a Somali came under attack at the Rotriak junction. The driver survived the fierce attack,” Commissioner Juol said.
“The truck was going to Mayom via Rotriak- Kai-Kang route when it came under attack by the gunmen in military uniforms, according to the driver and the other eyewitnesses who were also passengers,” he added.
Commissioner Juol stated that the truck was carrying 15 passengers when the armed men attacked it.
“Only four of them sustained injuries. Two men and two women were taken to Mayom County’s main hospital for treatment,” he explained.
Meanwhile, a civil society activist in Unity State, Doctor Riak Koang, confirmed the incident along the Rotriak road in Mayom County. He vehemently condemned the attack, urging authorities to step up security patrols on the roads leading to Mayom County.
Koang, however, claimed that the attack could have been triggered by the raging dispute between the Governor of Unity State and the SPLA-IO forces in the Ngol area.
“The two parties need to address the insecurity. The national government also needs to provide security backup to end the spate of highway attacks between the states,” he concluded.
