Four killed in fresh Abyei attack

At least four people were killed and two children abducted Monday morning in an attack in the disputed area of Abyei, a regional administrator said.

At least four people were killed and two children abducted Monday morning in an attack in the disputed area of Abyei, a regional administrator said.

In a statement seen by Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Abyei Chief Administrator Kuol Alor said the attack took place in the village of Mabok, located about 17 miles southeast of Abyei town.

He said the attackers killed four people and kidnapped two children. Kuol further said the attackers also took more than 100 goats and looted citizens’ properties.

The regional administrator accused Misseriya tribesmen of carrying out the attacks.

Misseriya community leaders could not immediately be reached for comment.

Abyei has been contested since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, while there have long been tensions between the Ngok Dinka community and the Misseriya herders who traverse the area looking for grazing.

Abyei is now under the administration of the UN interim security force.
