Two men and two women died on Saturday in armed attack in South Sudan’s Northern Upper Nile State, officials said Sunday.
Government officials did not identify the assailants in the attack. No one has claimed responsibility for the incident.
“Armed men launched an attack on citizens in Kilo 10 area on Saturday night,” Southwest Maban County Commissioner, Abdallah Nyama, told Radio Tamazuj.
“The assault on the civilians left four people including two women dead and six others wounded,” he added.
The county official identified the four people killed as Kada Omar, Baltom Nyede, Todi Nyede and Digua al-Khor.
The wounded victims, including four women, were taken to Bunj Hospital for treatment, said Commissioner Nyama.
“The state government has sent a delegation to investigate the deadly incident,” he said.
On his part, Northern Upper Nile’s information minister Diing Deng confirmed the incident, saying unknown gunmen attacked unarmed civilians in the area of Kilo 10 on Saturday.
“A security committee was dispatched to the area to find out what happened exactly. We don’t have more information about what took place,” he said.
Kilo 10 is a disputed territory between Maban and Melut counties.
In August 2017, Vice President James Wani Igga led a delegation to Northern Upper Nile State in an attempt to solve the border dispute. But the findings of the government report were not made public.
