Former UN official accuses Sudan of genocide in South Kordofan

A former UN official has accused the Sudanese government of launching a campaign of 'genocide' in the Nuba mountains border area of South Kordofan, by using similar tactics as those used in Darfur.

On Sunday Sudan denied the accusations saying there is no campaign to target civilians or certain ethnic groups during fighting with rebel groups in the border areas.

Mukesh Kapila, who was one of the first UN officials to raise the alarm about Darfur in 2004 said he has evidence that the government is committing crimes against humanity in South Kordofan.

Kapila told Reuters he saw government planes targeting non-Arab villagers and destroying their crops to force them to leave the land during his visit from February 28 to March 2.
