Former spy chief to make grand return to Juba

Newly-appointed Warrap State Governor Gen Akol KoorKuc is expected to return to Juba on Wednesday following his removal as the head of Intelligence.

According to a letter of invitation to the Warrap State community in Juba, seen by Radio Tamazuj, there were plans to welcome the new Governor at the Juba International Airport

The letter dated October 7 called on the residents, government officials, community leaders, and other groups from Warrap to gather at the Juba International Airport.

“On Wednesday, he (Akol Koor) will be returning to Juba, and we urge the people to turn up at the airport,” the Warrap State Community Coordinator, Kur Akol Malek, stated

The letter encouraged a large turnout to mark the occasion, inviting national and state ministers, MPs, youth leaders, cultural groups, and media outlets to participate in the event.

President Salva Kiir last week removed Koor from his long-held role as head of the National Security Service’s Internal Security Bureau (ISB).

Koor had led the country’s most powerful and controversial security agency since South Sudan’s independence in 2011.

His tenure at the ISB was marked by allegations of human rights abuses, including reports of arbitrary detentions and mistreatment of detainees, which drew international criticism. His removal from the position was part of a broader security reshuffle that saw Gen Akec Tong Aleu take over the agency’s leadership.

Koor’s new role as Governor of Warrap State comes with numerous challenges, given the region’s history of political volatility and insecurity.
