A former minister of local government and law enforcement agencies in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has tendered his resignation from the opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) of Riek Machar.
Kiir Chan Wol was appointed in early 2021 as part of the SPLM-IO representation in the revitalized government and was relieved in March this year when the party decided to replace him with Deng Liai.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, Chan, said he resigned from the party Thursday claiming that as he claimed that his political group’s administration was unsafe.
“I have tendered the resignation today (Thursday) and I will conduct a celebration in my area, Korok, after two weeks. And the reason for the resignation is that there is not safe administration because the leadership at the state level is unable to manage the party,” he said. “No benefits, all complaints, problems, and maladministration for that reason I decided to tender my resignation directly to Dr. Riek Machar who is the chairman of the party.”
On his part, Garang Wol Kon, the SPLM-IO Secretary-General for Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, confirmed the resignation of Mr. Chan but said the resigning official is still an IO member until the party approves his resignation.
“I can still call him a member of the SPLM-IO. When somebody resigns, it is the leadership of the party itself to accept the resignation letter but we still never accepted,” said Wol.
