The former governor of Lakes State, Gen. Matur Chut Dhuol, passed away on Tuesday in Juba after battling with kidney disease for nearly 5 years, family members and state officials said.
He was 70 years old.
Manuer Chut Dhuol, the brother of the deceased told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that the former liberation war fighter passed on at 6:00 p.m. at the Nile King Hospital which specializes in treating kidney ailments.
“Yes, I can confirm to you as a family member that Major General Matur Chut passed away on Tuesday 23 January 2024,” he said. “The cause of his death was related to kidney illness and four gunshots which he sustained during the liberation struggle.”
According to Manuer, former governor and SPLA veteran has been battling kidney disease for the last 5 years.
“I appreciate his colleagues, friends, and everyone who stood with him during his time of illness until he passed away yesterday (Tuesday),” he added. “We as the family have appreciated them.”
When contacted, Lakes State Governor Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor said he had formed a committee chaired by Chol Kuotwel Manhom and deputized by the minister of information and communication, Paul Cabiet Anyang, and directed them to handle funeral and burial arrangements.
“We are mourning the late former governor, Gen. Matur Chut Dhuol. Everyone in Lakes State is mourning,” he stated. “I direct you to contact the minister of information and communication, Paul Cabiet, to give you details.”
For his part, Information Minister Cabiet said that the committee formed by Governor Tueny has camped at the home of the deceased in Pacong Payam and is preparing a befitting sendoff.
“We are mourning with the family of the late former governor at his resident in Pacong Payam and the preparations for his burial are being organized and an official announcement on the date of his burial will be communicated to you,” he said.
The minister added that Gen. Chut was a liberator, veteran politician, and a son of Lakes State and that he deserves respect and a decent burial.
