Former labour minister accuses government of committing crimes against civilians

A former South Sudanese minister of labour who resigned recently from the unity government has accused government forces of committing atrocities against civilians in Western Bahr al Ghazal, greater Equatoria and Wau Shiluk area in Upper Nile state.

Lt. Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam, who was a senior member of the SPLM-IO faction allied to First Vice President Taban Deng in Juba, was the labour minister in Kiir's administration.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj from Khartoum on Thursday, Gabriel Lam said the continuous atrocities against civilians, besides the lack of action to bring an end to the ongoing conflict, prompted him to resign from the unity government.

Duop attributed his silence before the resignation, to lack of freedom of expression in Juba.

“I was like a person in the mouth of a crocodile in Juba. I have been aware of things that happen in greater Equatoria, in Torit and other places, but I could not do anything because I was with an enemy in Juba,” he said.

Radio Tamazuj could not reach government officials to commnent on Duop’s claims.
