The wife of the former governor of the defunct Western Lakes State Deng Mamer Yuol allegedly committed suicide by shooting herself in their residence in Rumbek of Lakes State on Wednesday morning.
The state police commissioner Major General Madut Ngor told Radio Tamazuj that Mamer's wife Anhom Mayom Mabor shot herself dead using her husband's gun at Deng-nhial residential area at 8 am.
"Yes, the wife of a former governor of the defunct Western Lakes State has committed suicide with her husband's gun. Her husband the former governor Deng Mamer Yuol is present in Rumbek," he said.
Lakes State deputy governor Poth Madit Dut said the former governor has been taken in for questioning.
"Her husband, the former governor is taken by police and is in the police custody undergoing police investigation," Madit said.
According to Dut Manyang Majok, a police investigative officer who was at the scene, the former governor Mamer was taken to Rumbek Panda military barracks after he threatened to kill himself.
He went on to say other family members who were at the house are also being questioned.
"The reason why the former governor was taken to the military barracks in Panda Hotel is that the former governor John Deng Mamer Yuol was threatening to kill himself. But the police will continue to do its investigation against the former governor," Manyang said. "We took the body of his late wife after she committed suicide to Rumbek Hospital for postmortem before burial and also the police has also carried investigations on family members who were present at home."
The cabinet affairs minister in the state Stephen Mathiang Deng Monydit, also a representative of the Pakam Community from which the late comes, said he visited the scene but can only speak once investigations reveal the cause and circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.
He revealed that the late was Mamer's second wife.
