South Sudan’s former finance minister, Arthur Akuien Chol, on Tuesday survived an accident that claimed one life while traveling from Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal to his hometown in Aweil, Northern Bahr el Ghazal.
The accident occurred 6 kilometers to Aweil town at the Kuom Bridge.
The Aweil police’s head of the incident department, Major Yai Ater, told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that one of the passengers in the vehicle identified as Maduok Ngor Madut lost his life on the spot. He added that the cause of the accident was speeding while the driver of Akuien tried to overtake a truck.
“The accident was on a bridge on the road to Aweil, the car was carrying the former finance minister Akuien Chol,” Maj. Ater said. “It was a serious accident and the person who died in the accident was a passenger called Maduok Ngor Madut.”
The police officer said the former minister’s driver, Akon Dut, survived the accident, and the driver of the truck, an Eritrean national called Samra Pasquale, were both in police custody.
“The suspects are currently detained at the traffic police headquarters and the wounded have been released from the hospital in good condition,” Maj. Ater said.
